My son wants to be a woman. What should I do?

My son, who is now 14 years old, told me that he was in the wrong body, and wanted a sex change.

It totally shocked me to hear this, and I'm confused about what I should do with him.

I've never had a daughter, and deep down inside I wish I had one, but to lose a son to get one... I don't know what or how to think.

Does anyone know what I should do about this?My son wants to be a woman. What should I do?
Assuming this is a genuine question...

What you need to do right now is to support her (Yes, HER; a transsexual girl is not a boy); this is a difficult and scary time for her - and for you, too.

She will need all the help and love you can give her. As any adult trans person will tell you, a supportive and understanding family is a luxury few of us had, and all of us needed; it's worth a lot.

You should learn as much as you can about transsexualism; what it is,(And perhaps more importantly, what it ISN'T), how it affects those who suffer from it, and their families and loved ones, how it's treated...I've put some resources at the end of this answer for you both.

At some point, you will need to take her to a Gender therapist. If you don't know where to find one, there's a search list here; http://www.drbecky.com/therapists.html

I recommend you both read this; it's the true story of a young trans girl and her parents. It will help you understand what's going on, and hopefully help you to deal with it; http://ai.eecs.umich.edu/people/conway/T

And here are some more resources; this isn't, of course, a comprehensive list, but it will give you a grounding on which you can build;

http://transsexual.org/index.html (A good basic site)

http://www.antijen.org/ (intended for the younger trans person)

http://www.tsroadmap.com/index.html (Probably the best and most comprehensive TS site online)

http://ai.eecs.umich.edu/people/conway/c (Probably the second best)

http://www.transkidspurplerainbow.org/in (About, and for, trans children)

http://www.transparentcanada.ca/?file=ko :(Yes, I know it's Canadian, but don't hold that against it; it's a good site)

Oh, and this is one I consider obligatory reading for anyone dealing with transsexualism, or transsexual people, in any capacity; http://www.trans-health.com/kara/respect

There are dozens, even hundreds, more sites, but if you start with these, you won't feel quite so overwhelmed with information, and can explore the others as and when you need to.My son wants to be a woman. What should I do?

If thats what he feels, let him feel it. Don't let him go through life miserable and confused although this announcement may be very shocking..My son wants to be a woman. What should I do?
This may sound cliche, but really just talk to him and make sure that this is what he wants to do. We have all gone through those times when we really wanted to do something, and then after thinking about it, thought it was stupid. If you're (and he is) sure that it's what he wants to do, I would support him - it's not about him hating you, it's about what he thinks is best.

Hope this helps, good luck!My son wants to be a woman. What should I do?

You should support him, whatever happens, he is still your child. My son wants to be a woman. What should I do?
this seems like a really tough decision

but i'd rather lose a son and gain a daughter then lose a child forever....he'll hate you if you dont support him cuz eventually he'll do what he thinks is right. My son wants to be a woman. What should I do?

If this is real then you have a Daughter that was born transsexual. She is going to need all of your love and support. She needs to speak with a gender therapist as soon as possible. In addition to the links Diane has provided these may help you also.

This is very real to your child. Rather she is truly transsexual will take time to figure out. There is nothing more important then your unconditional love. If she is suffering from transsexualism it is never going to go away. She may be able to suppress it but it will lead to depression if it has not already. I applaud your courage for listening to your child and getting her the help she needs.

Good luck to you and your family. My son wants to be a woman. What should I do?
I applaud you for seeking information instead of just dismissing your child.

Use the links that Diane and Clones gave you. They have a wealth of information in them. Take your time and don't be overwhelmed by the volume of information.

As the other transwomen have said. She needs your support and love more than anything else.

Good luck.My son wants to be a woman. What should I do?
First thing is stop using male pronouns when you address your daughter, she is a transsexual woman. Love and support her, because what she is going through is not easy.

Remember you are not loosing a son you're gaining the daughter you didn't know you had. She is the same person you have always lovedMy son wants to be a woman. What should I do?
You should let him be what he was born.

Once a guy, always a guy.

Don't let him. It's wrong. He will feel completely weird and nasty and uncomfortable.
