How can I found out myself if my brakes needs to be changed?

I went to Avis Lube to get an oil change and during the change I was told that my brakes are in very bad condition and needs to be changed immediately. I was completely shocked to hear this. The brakes are fine to me when I drive and the last time I changed them was about 30,000 miles ago.

I don't know if the service guy was honestly trying to help me out or just trying to sell. How can I find out myself if my brakes needs to be changed?

thanks alotHow can I found out myself if my brakes needs to be changed?
only real way to tell is pull a front wheel and rear wheel and look at the brakes. How can I found out myself if my brakes needs to be changed?
at 30,000 miles you probably do need to change your brakes. they may feel fine right now but the lining on the pads could be very worn down. the way you check it is jack the car up, take off the wheel, there will be two bolts holding the caliper onto the bracket. take them out and then the pads will just slide right out. if the lining looks thin then its time to replace them. if your rotors have a lip on the outside edge then they may need replacing or resurfacing as well. How can I found out myself if my brakes needs to be changed?
you can't tell if you need new breaks by 'feeling' them usually if you feel them it means it's too late and the rotor is damaged. Assuming they are disk the easiest way to tell is remove the wheel and check. By looking at teh back of the break housing you can see the thickness of the pads. See link otherwise get a second opinion. How can I found out myself if my brakes needs to be changed?
If you can remove the tire and look at the brake pads, you will see a piece of steel on the corner of one of the pads (called a squealer) it will be pointing towards the rotor. when the brakes wear down to the piece of steel, it rubs against the rotor and make a squealing noise that tells you your brakes are low. See if it touching or almost touching the rotor, if it's like 1/16 inches away from the rotor then go ahead and change them. Check both the left and right side as they sometimes wear at different ratesHow can I found out myself if my brakes needs to be changed?
look at them. if the pad is thin u need them. 30k is about right for needing new padsHow can I found out myself if my brakes needs to be changed?
jack up your car, take a wheel off and inspect them or have someone look at them for you
